How Can You Manage Diabetes, the Ayurvedic Way

Diabetes is an unwelcomed guest that curbs your sweet tooth craving release. Although it's hereditary, it can also be acquired over time. Ayurveda treats Prameha(Diabetes) as a shift from the normal due to a lack of proper care for the Doshas. So how can you manage diabetes, the Ayurvedic way?


Diabetes According to Ayurveda

Diabetes is characterized by a high level of glucose in the blood, also known as hyperglycemia, Prameha in Ayurveda. The pancreas releases insulin into the bloodstream as blood sugar levels rise. It is defined as a metabolic disorder in which an individual has excessive blood glucose (blood sugar) levels due to insufficient insulin output, the body's cells failing to respond appropriately to the created insulin, or both. 

Diabetes is known in Ayurveda as "Madhumeha" or "Prameha." Diabetes is translated as "sweet urine" in Ayurveda since "Madhu" means sweet and "Meha" means urine. The name is derived from the fact that diabetic pee is similar to honey. Ayurveda describes each individual as a unique blend of Doshas. 


Types of Diabetes

The three Doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. In contrast, Kapha is frigid, heavy, and slimy. Each Dosha imbalance produces corresponding health issues. A Kapha Dosha imbalance causes diabetes. Conversely, being Kapha dominant does not inherently suggest diabetes. Without an ayurvedic diabetic diet, the Kapha dominance might lead to diabetes. Diabetes is divided mainly into two types. The first one is Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes, an autoimmune illness that causes high blood sugar and glucose levels. Urination is frequent, hunger is intense, and weight loss is rapid. 


Causes of Diabetes

Ayurveda has traditionally presented the causes of diabetes as follows:

  • Inactivity
  • Excessive sleep
  • Excessive yogurt consumption
  • Domestic, aquatic, and marshy animal meat soup
  • Sweet food articles
  • Other Kapha-stimulating regimens

Diabetes can develop in two ways, according to Ayurveda. First, Avarana is the obstruction of pathways or channels in the body.  Second, Dhatukshaya, in which the tissues are depleted, is classified as juvenile diabetes.


Symptoms of Diabetes

Diabetes in Ayurveda has three major symptoms:

  • Polyuria
  • Sweetness in urine
  • Sweetness throughout the body

Diabetes can also cause polydipsia (excess thirst), diarrhea, fever, burning sensation, general debility, indigestion, necrosis, carbuncles, inflammatory lesions, muscular wasting, excessive sleep, and sluggishness.

Diabetes tends to impact all the Dhatus (tissues in the body):

  • Rakta (blood): poor blood cell quality due to increased viscosity and thus fragility.
  • Asthi (bone): bone tissue demineralization, decreased density
  • Majja (nervous tissue): brain tissue deterioration
  • Shukra (reproductive tissue): sexual dysfunction, transmission to the next generation
  • Sira (blood vessels): atherosclerosis
  • Necrosis, ulceration, and carbuncles are all symptoms of Tvak (skin).
  • Snayu (nerves): neuropathies
